Scania Introduced the G38 Gearbox Which is the Final Evolution in G-Series

Scania gets its latest model gearbox, the G38. This model was introduced at the Elmia fair in Sweden, marking the latest iteration of the G-Series gearbox for the Scania Opticruise. The first G series gearbox was introduced back in 2019, and the G38 will be the last iteration of the G series gearbox, which will team up with Scania.

The G38 was developed to partner up with the most powerful 16-liter V8 engine with 770 horsepower and 3700 NM; this tops it on the Scania's legendary list. The first model introduced with the G series gearbox was the G33. Since then, it has been tailor-made to handle the greater torque of Scania's 770 horsepower engine that the V8 is producing. Even though it's a handling of 3700 NM, it has the same exact dimensions and weight as the one found in the G33.

The G series gearbox is mostly lighter, weighing at 60 to 70 KG, than the other gearbox that they will be replacing. What really makes it lighter is mainly due to the aluminum housing and its smaller dimensions. The other greatest achievement is that it's a low-noise ride; this is one of the future regulations set aside.

"It's basically about metallurgy, choosing more extreme steel quality, and applying technology like cog polishing and shot peening in aid of increasing the strength and durability of certain key components," says Delevoloper engineer at Scania R and D Mats Henriksson. Also, extra oil channels have been added for the most crusial parts.

The introduction of the G series features something of a revolution at the time. It offers customers the value you can ask for. Also, it's flexible for operation on broad functions in which horsepower and torque are involved. The G38 Gearbox can also come as a Heavy Duty Version (HD Version) and a wide planetary gear wheel to add more robustness to the G38.

As the gearbox may be shorter than the common Scania gearbox, it still retains the same type of operation present, GRS 0926. The G38 differs from others because of one built-in torque limitation, in explanation: 100 NM of engine power may get cut off in some certain gears and RPM points. You may get 14 forward gears on the G38, including a super crawler gear and a direct gear, and you can also get the opportunity of selecting up to 8 gears for going in reverse.
