The core principle applied focuses on Epic power applied through cutting-edge aerodynamics and a light-weight chassis. The aerodynamics design is further enhanced by a unique transformation process from road mode to track mode by clicking a button; this lowers the ride height by 37 mm at the front and 17 mm at the back, and a heave system stiffens the suspension. The front and rear active wings are deployed, and the McLaren Active Longtail extends backwards up to 300mm to help create 1,000 kg of downforce.

Power and Performance

The McLaren W1 comes with a plugin hybrid powertrain system that consists of the all-new MHP-8 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine with 916 horsepower connected to a 342 horsepower radial flux electric motors combining together to produce 1258 horsepower and 988 pounds of torque. The power is sent to the rear wheels via an 8-speed dual clutch transmission and an E differential. The W1 is able to hit 60 mph in just 2.7 seconds, and 187 mph can use 12.7 seconds. The McLaren W1 top speed is 217 mph.

Battery and Charging

The electronic powertrain uses a small 1.4 kwh battery, providing 1.2 travel range. McLaren claims that the level two charger onboard can take 22 minutes to fill 80 percent of charge.

Technology

McLaren W1

The McLaren W1 uses carbon fiber throughout the W1; this helps in saving weight. Active suspension system known as Race Active Chassis Control III is standard and features Comfort, Sport, and Race driving modes. McLaren says that the suspension is made of titanium bars as well as the 3D-printed uprights and control arms. The braking system comprises 15.4-inch Carbon Ceramic brake rotors, and the front discs are held by forged monoblock six-piston calipers, and the rears are clamped by four-piston units. It also comes with a set of 19-inch and 20-inch rear wheels wrapped with standard Pirelli P Zero tires.
